What it is

An SR-22 is a certificate. Not a policy.

The insurance company files it with the state to prove a liability policy is in force. You buy the policy. You do not mail the form.

  1. The order names the proof, the limits, and the end date.
  2. An insurer that will file in that state writes the policy.
  3. The insurer sends the certificate. A lapse is reported, and the period can restart.

FR-44

Florida and Virginia use this stricter certificate for some serious offenses. Higher limits. Same idea: the insurer files the proof.
